Operatives of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) and members of the Traders Union, on Monday, jointly dislodged all roadside trading activities at Ipata market in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Authority, Omotayo Taofiq, the roadside trading activities have been impending the free-flow of traffic on the road.
The statement read partly, “The operation which commenced at around 06:00 hours is meant to clear the road of all encroachment especially those caused by traders who had turned the road and the road median to their space of display.
“It would be observed that the road at Ipata had been partially taken over by traders who display goods on the road thus reducing the width of the road which always result to traffic snarl along the route thus causing delay to motorists, slowing down the economic activities of the area and exposing traders and pedestrians to undue dangers.
“Some motorists interviewed by KWARTMA’s media unit during the operation expressed delight in the special operation. They opined that the time used in transit on the road had greatly reduced since the road is free of obstruction.”
