NBC fines Arise TV, Channels, AIT N9m over coverage of EndSARS protests

National Broadcasting Station (NBC) has slammed sanctions on three Lagos-based television stations for improper coverage of the EndSARS protests in Lagos State.


The acting Director-General of the Commission, Armstrong Idachaba made the announcement on Monday October 26; alleging that the three affected TV stations – Africa Independent Television (AIT), Arise Television and Channels Television – violated the broadcast code by using unverifiable online video footages obtained from social media.
Giditrendz reported that the television stations were accused of airing unverified images and videos of the alleged shooting which took place at Lekki toll gate.
It was gathered that the NBC fined Channels Television, AIT and Arise TV N3m each over the coverage.
Idachaba who added that DAAR Communications will be fined separately for using an unverifiable news item on the fire incident at the National Christian Centre.
He also stated that this will be the last warning before a heavier sanction will be slammed on offenders.

SERAP reacts;

Reacting, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the sanctions; threatening to sue NBC if the sanctions, which it described as “illegal” is not withdrawn within 48 hours.
