Ondo State University Shuts Down Indefinitely Over Death Of Students (See Full Story)

There was tension over the weekend among students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State following the death of two students of the institution.

With the fillers that the situation might lead to break down of law and order within the school environment, the management of the institution directed students of the institution to proceed on two weeks break.

The students were set to commence examination today March 9, 2020 before they were directed to proceed on mid-semester break till March 22, 2020 over the development while the examination was postponed indefinitely.


It was gathered that on March 5, a 200-Level female student in the Department of Educational Management, Miss Temitope Patience Ayedun died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo after she was rushed from the university’s health centre.

Late Miss Ayedun was alleged to have died after contracting lassa fever. Her death had angered other students who accused the school authorities of negligence and failure to take her to the appropriate health facility.

Barely 24 hours when the death of late Miss Ayedun broke on campus the news of the death of another student filtered in.

This time, a 300-Level student of the Department of Biochemistry, Mr. Olakunle Matthew Olayinka was said to have died at the university’s health centre following wounds sustained from gunshot by unidentified gunmen suspected to be cultists.

While urging the students to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without panic, the school authority in a statement signed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa assured that the management in conjunction with security agencies, are on top of the situation.

The statement partly read,

“the University Management received, with rude shock, the loss of two of our students to death in the course of the week.

“On admission of Miss Temitope Patience Ayedun, a 200 Level of the Department of Educational Management, at the University Health Centre, the Medical Personnel tried their best to manage her until she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo where she was intensively managed before she died on Thursday, 5th March, 2020.

“The news of the death of Mr. Olakunle Matthew Olayinka, a 300-Level student of the Department of Biochemistry, following wounds from gunshot by unidentified gunmen, was received last night, Friday, 6th March, 2020, after the Medical personnel at the University Health Centre put up spirited efforts to stabilise him.

“The Security agents are still on the trail of the assailants for apprehension.

“The University Management, under the leadership of the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga E. Ige, commiserates with the families of the deceased, the entire students and the University community on these sad events, and prays the Lord console the families and the entire University community.

“The University Management has beefed up security within and outside the campus to forestall recurrence.

“Mourning the painful loss of these our students, the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga E. Ige, on behalf of the University Senate has, therefore, directed that the First Semester University-wide GST and ENT CBT examinations for 2019/2020 academic session earlier scheduled for Monday, 9th March, 2020 to Thursday, 12th March, 2020 be postponed till further notice.

“The Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga E. Ige, on behalf of the University Senate has approved a two-week Mid-Semester Break for all students with immediate effect.

“This is to enable our students refresh and prepare well for the First Semester Examinations for 2019/2020 academic session on resumption.

“Students are, however, expected to resume for the continuation of the First Semester, 2019/2020 academic calendar on Monday, 22nd March, 2020.”
