Yemi Alade: Mama of Africa Regardless.

It all started in 2009, Yemi Eberechi Alade aka Yemi Alade, a young lady with dreams and aspirations emerged the winner of the maiden edition of the peak talent show. At that time, she was still a student in the University of Lagos but her appearance and composure as a newbie on TV showed to the world that she was ready to become a Music superstar. Shortly after that, she signed with Effizy music group.

After signing, Yemi continued to put in the work, releasing pop singles like Ghen Ghen Love and Fimisile but this singles didn’t give her the break into the industry like she wanted. Then she looked inward into her love life, talked about her experience with “Johnny” the player and without a delay, she made a song out of it. In 2014, Yemi released the song titled Johnny and it became a monster hit.

Yemi Alade‘s discography can’t be complete without a Johnny, the song didn’t only break her into super stardom, it took her to heights where she felt worthy to pronounce herself the Mama of Africa. It’s noteworthy that after her debut album Kings ofqueens, Yemi promoted the album by touring African countries, on this tour, she connected and bonded with different genre’s of African music, nature and lifestyle. When she got back to recording, she knew she needed to put all of those experience and inspiration into a new album.

In March 2016, Yemi fully took the title of being the “Mama of Africa”, she released her sophomore album (with the same title),an album that captures elements of diffrent african sounds of afropop, coupe decale, highlife and Rnb. Yemi; Mama of Africa?

Over the years, Yemi as lost touch with her local fans in Nigeria. A great deal of the love and support towards her works comesfrom other african countries and foreign fans. There’s an adage that says, “A prophet has no value/respect in his home town”, this sounds like Yemi Alade excluding the fact that Yemi is no prophet and she as not been one to take stands in political or religion related issues that affects the country.

Several times she as received negative criticisms for her lyrical contents from both music critics and fans. In an attempt to appeal to a wide range of audience, she made songs like Tumbum, a song that got harsh criticism from critics and was likened to be a part 2 of her hit single Johnny.

Regardless, her commercial success speaks volume and her consistent work ethics proves it repeatedly that she knows what to put out to get what she wants. Most times.
